The Meridian School District, also know as Joint School District #2, is the largest in the state, and has a proud history of excellence, innovation and sound financial management. The District operates on a middle school system, with elementary schools serving K-5, middle schools years 6-8, and high schools 9-12. Year-round elementary schools are available. The District offers alternative middle and high schools, and a large professional-technical program.
In recent years, the District has opened schools of choice that integrate the primary focus with the Idaho State Education Standards. These magnet schools are offered with an arts focus, and a math/science focus.
Meridian has several charter schools within its District. There are two charter high schools, one which focuses on technology, and one on medical vocations.
Excellence in education is a top priority in Meridian with parent organizations, civic groups and business leaders working with teachers and school administrators to constantly improve student motivation and achievement.
The District has earned statewide recognition for excellence in academics, athletics and other student activities. The District’s students consistently outperform state and national averages on standardized tests of student performance.
Based on the 2000 Census:
• 27% of the adult population have attended college, higher than the national average of 24.4%
• 92% of the adult population are high school graduates, higher than the national average of 80%
Higher Education
Numerous colleges and universities are located within a 20 mile radius of Meridian, including Boise State University, Northwest Nazarene University and College of Idaho. The University of Idaho and Idaho State University also have programs in the area.
The University of Phoenix and George Fox University campuses in southwest Idaho are located in Meridian.
Coming to Meridian in 2009: Idaho State University will move it’s Treasure Valley Health Professions campus to Meridian. Associate, Bachelor, Master and Doctoral programs will be offered in various health professions, including Pharmacy, Nursing, Clinical Laboratory Science, Counseling, and Paramedic Science.
Western Idaho College, the area’s first community college, will begin classes in 2009 in Nampa, just five miles west of Meridian.
